Project 90 by 2030

Project 90 by 2030 is a social and environmental justice organisation inspiring and mobilising South African society towards a sustainably developed and equitable low-carbon future. It works stakeholders and decision makers to identify policies and actions that support climate justice, with a specific focus on developing environmental leadership among youth. The organisation aims to increase the ability of young people to engage government – through active public participation – to address climate change, energy poverty, and the social injustices that intersect in their communities.

The YouLead Initiative

Project 90’s flagship YouLead Initiative is a youth programme centered around developing environmental leadership in young climate leaders as the world transitions to an equitable, low-carbon society.

Forty young people are selected through a rigorous screening process, to begin a 6-month self-development and skills enhancing course aimed at boosting self-esteem, teamwork, and increasing young people’s capacity to achieve in whatever context they find themselves. YouLead Warriors learn how to become active citizens within their communities through the climate focused leadership initiative, incorporating fun activities that promote care for the planet. They have the opportunity to network with other young, motivated individuals, go on overnight hikes, learn effective communication and social media skills, and participate in a practical renewable energy project. This project is completed within the President’s Award framework to allow the participants to complete The Bronze Award.

Youth that have completed the programme can continue their development as part of the Community Partnerships Initiative. They continue to develop skills and knowledge and engage as activists and leaders in other organisations and networks. Through Community Partnerships, Project 90 collaborates with participants who wish to empower their communities with knowledge and opportunities to understand the need for an energy transition to foster a more just society. The programme includes practical actions as well as the active citizenry needed to shift energy choices made by the city, province, and nation. The voices of the youth and community activists lend support to Project 90’s policy and advocacy campaign towards a Just Energy Transition.

In the time that Project 90 has operated, the following has been achieved:

  • Installed 19 renewable energy sites for community centers in 4 provinces
  • Worked with Energy Smart Citizens In 8 communities for the period 2015-2017
  • Supported the set-up of carbon-cutting leadership clubs in schools across South Africa in order to inspire low-carbon actions for the period of 2007 – 2017
  • Partnered with 17 community activists In Cape Town for the period 2018-2021
  • Supported 145 youth from Khayelitsha area on their climate leadership journey for 2018 onwards
  • Published five comprehensive research documents on the Just Energy Transition to continue to mobilise for a shift towards a sustainable and just energy system for South Africans

Project 90’s key outcomes are building a movement of youth from under-resourced areas to advocate for and to be actioning a low carbon future, where all people and earth systems are valued.
