VUSA provides social upliftment to primary school children in the community of Langa. The organisation achieves this through academic, sporting and extra-mural programmes. The ECD programme supports three registered ECD centres with a programme aimed at numeracy and literacy development through play as well as a mobile library service. The after-school programme offers a safe space for primary school children to participate in sports (rugby). Children also receive academic support in English and Maths), a hot nutritional meal as well as opportunities to participate in recreational outings.
VUSA’s newest programme will launch in 2022. The Atlas Digibus is a bus which has been converted into a mobile classroom with 40 laptops and two teaching stations. The bus will support primary schools in Langa in the mornings and offer coding, staff training, parent workshops and high school revisions programmes after school.
Key outcomes:
ECD programme: Support school readiness as well as provide introduction to English as a second language
After-school programme: The programme provides access to safe adults as well as a safe environment for children to be active. This contributes to a reduction of toxic stress and increases discipline and self confidence among children from different backgrounds, cultures and religions. Team sport also teaches teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship. Residents of the local community benefit through employment and skills development. Children also have access to a hot nutritious meal daily.
