The Bookery establishes well-stocked, dynamic school libraries in under-resourced schools in the Western and Eastern Cape and Gauteng. These libraries, which stock age-appropriate reading and educational material, help to foster a love of reading, improve literacy, and enhance the quality of education a school provides.
The Bookery libraries facilitate the development of systemic library support structures at schools, creating an environment for the sustainable delivery of literacy interventions and programmes. Envisaged outcomes include ensuring that learners have access to books and are actively loaning, and literacy activities like reading clubs, spelling bees, debates and poetry are encouraged. The libraries are also used by educators to conduct research for assignments and teaching lessons using library materials.
